Week eight brought some of the season’s most demanding conditions so far. Persistent rain and steadily rising water kept the Rio Marié in constant transition, requiring anglers and guides to read the river carefully and adapt their approach throughout the week.
We welcomed a group of friends and couples from South Africa, hosted by our friend Justin. Some were entirely new to fishing and taking their first steps in fly fishing. With conditions changing daily, we focused on choosing productive water, refining presentations, and making the most of each opportunity.
Success this week required patience, persistence, and adaptability. The most memorable moments came when the river challenged us most—from an instinctive cast across a lagoon to strong finishes after earlier chances had slipped away.

River Conditions: Water levels continued rising throughout the week. The steady rise changed fish location and behavior, requiring constant observation as guides adjusted their approach to the evolving conditions. Weather Conditions: Mixed rainy and sunny conditions marked the week, with water temperatures averaging approximately 26°C. |

|Unforgettable Moments of the Week
Justin and the Cast Across the Lagoon
Sometimes an opportunity starts with a simple decision to trust what you see.
While working one side of a lagoon, Justin noticed something that made him change direction and send his fly all the way toward the opposite bank.
The decision paid off when a quality peacock bass rose to meet the fly.
It was a perfect example of how instinct and observation can create an opportunity even when conditions are demanding.

Karen’s Comeback
Karen had already experienced a frustrating stretch on the water. One large fish slipped away from her, and another opportunity for her husband nearby was lost.
Rather than letting those moments define the day, she stayed focused and kept fishing.
Her persistence paid off when she landed a beautiful peacock bass, turning a difficult stretch into a strong finish.

Graham Finishes Strong
The final day still carried the same difficult conditions that had shaped the rest of the week.
Graham continued working the water with focus and consistency, determined to finish the trip on his terms.
Before the week ended, he found a quality peacock bass and closed out his time on the Rio Marié with a meaningful final catch.

|Looking Ahead
With the river continuing to rise, the coming days will require the same close attention to changing conditions.
Week eight reinforced an important part of fishing the Rio Marié. Not every week is defined by record numbers or major milestones. Sometimes the most meaningful moments come from staying engaged, making the right decision at the right time, and continuing to create opportunities when the river makes them harder to find.
